When he is not writing, he hikes in the Colorado mountains and pursues radio-controlled cars and planes. He has practical knowledge of constructing lasting creations, both physical and narrative, and has worked as a mechanic for the last thirty years. His books raise the issues of bravery, interest, and relationships we create in the course of our lives, and he stresses that the experiences we have are more valuable than material possessions.
